A sign of the material and cultural wealth, as well as the technological and artistic development in Ek Balam, is manifested in mural painting, where artisans achieved great mastery, decorating their buildings with incredible works of art, ranging from vaulted ceilings with monochromatic designs, up to full vaults, covered with colorful and complex murals, whose vestiges reflect relevant moments of the city. The pictorial style of Ek'Balam is considered one of the best in the Mayan area, since, being a naturalist, he expresses in a very real way, with the correct proportions and with remarkable delicacy and plasticity, the representations of deities and mythical beings in the painted covers , as well as human beings and animals represented on the walls of buildings, which unfortunately have not yet been published properly. The artistic and intellectual level of Ek Balam can also be seen in the "Mural of the 96 glyphs", a masterpiece of calligraphy comparable to the "Table of 96 glyphs" of Palenque.1 Since 1990 the project Prehispanic mural painting in Mexico, Institute of Aesthetic Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, is dedicated to the recording and study of pre-Columbian murals, such as those of Ek'Balam.
